Battle against bird flu
[Secular Blasphemy] We must now demand that this community, and the faith leaders who insist Islam is a religion of peace, expose and expel the radical elements among them. To win the war on terror, we must stop the recruitment of young jihadis.

Good Reading
[By the Bayou] In testimony before the House of Representatives, Tommy Thompson explained that while "private investment should drive the development of most medical products," only the government was in a position to develop those products that "everyone hopes...will never be needed" as a protection against "rare yet deadly threats." The government, in other words, was willing to spend lots of money on biological threats that were unlikely or farfetched but not on antivirals or new antibiotics for the diseases that were actually most menacing, like avian flu.

Bird flu in the unfriendly skies
[Effect Measure] A third mutation, a 20 codon deletion in the neuraminidase (NA) gene, was reported in the Beijing group's paper and similarly noted to be genotype V in the Hong Kong paper (if you are interested in the meaning of some of these terms, visit the Flu Wiki Influenza Primer II and Naming Influenza Viruses entries). Both groups agreed the Qinghai virus is distinct from others, including those circulating in Vietnam and other southeast asian countries.

July 7 Flu Update
[The Coming Influenza Pandemic?] "God help me," Guan said, sounding exasperated, "they are trying to close everyone's lab." He said he believes the new rules are an excuse for authorities to exert tighter control over the dissemination of lab results, and are not aimed at protecting the wider population from bird flu outbreaks that have dotted the country in recent months.

All Together Now
[Pacific Views] This virus is in a position to threaten the lives of millions around the globe, and to wreak havoc on the security of our food supply. Even if it doesn't mutate into a human-compatible strain anytime soon, how well does anyone think our factory-farmed chickens, cramped into their own filth like so many boxes of frozen chicken nuggets in storage, will survive a bird disease pandemic?

Government to cancel rugby games
[beNZylpiperazine] Alarm calls over the prospect of the H5N1 bird flu virus mutating to a human-to-human transmissible form are sounding more loudly by the day. Global epidemics (pandemics) have occurred three times in the past century - the "Hong Kong" flu (H3N2) of 1968, the "Asian" flu (H2N2) of 1957 and the "Spanish flu" (H1N1) in 1918.

Bird Flu Pandemic: Not If, But When
[edstrong.blog-city.com] The WHO says that an H5N1 pandemic could kill up to 7.4 million people globally, because people lack immunity to it. And half a million Americans could die and more than 2 million could end up in the hospital with serious complications if an even moderately severe strain of a pandemic flu hit, a report by the Trust for America's Health says.
