Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Ignore It...
[Simply Left Behind] Africa has joined Asia as a "ground zero" spot for avian flu outbreaks, specifically Nigeria and now Egypt, which along with these two reported deaths has a third confirmed case. Vietnam has once more announced a wholesale slaughter of domestic birds, while South Korea announced a fourth confirmed case in December alone.

Fresh outbreaks in Korea and Vietnam call for major intervention
[Flu Patrol] With a fourth outbreak of H5N1-caused bird flu reported in South Chungchong Province, South Korea on December 21, the Korean government called for the culling of more than 23,000 poultry on top of already 1.13 million poultry slaughtered. The agriculture ministry also destroyed 50,000 eggs and quarantined more than 1.65 million chichens and ducks within a 10 kilometer radius of the outbreak.

Some thoughts on the age distribution of H5N1 cases
[Effect Measure] It is the young and young adult most likely to have close contact with infected birds, and since this contact is a feature in their clinical history that calls attention to the possibility of H5N1 infection, they are diagnosed more readily than the elderly who don't give this history. That leaves open the possibility that other kinds of exposure might be involved, something we see no reason to rule out with the present evidence.
