Bird Flu Monitor > A TIME'S MEMORY: T-705 (favipiravir) activity against lethal H5N1 ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Here, we demonstrate that T-705 effectively protects mice from lethal infection with oseltamivir-sensitive or -resistant highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses. Furthermore, our biochemical analysis suggests that T-705 ribofuranosyl triphosphate, an active form of T-705, acts like purines or purine nucleosides in human cells and does not inhibit human DNA synthesis.

[Bird Flu Watch] T-705 (favipiravir) activity against lethal H5N1 influenza A ...: Moreover, reassortment between H5N1 viruses and oseltamvir-resistant human H1N1 viruses currently circulating could create oseltamivir-resistant H5N1 viruses, rendering the oseltamivir stockpile obsolete. Therefore, there is a need for unique and effective antivirals to combat H5N1 influenza viruses.
[Bird Flu Monitor] Bird Flu Monitor: Flu] [Course (24) bird flu threat : newses Japan: Effect Measure: Moreover, unlike oseltamivir and zanamivir (Tamiflu and Relenza), oral doses of T-705RTP seem to work even when administration is delayed for 72 hours after infection with a lethal H5N1 virus (either Tamiflu sensitive or Tamiflu resistant strains). At 72 hours delayed administration was complete protection with T-705 but resulted in only 50% survival of mice after similarly delayed treatment with Tamiflu. The Smart Way Protect ...

[New England Journal of Medicine] NEJM -- Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Infection in Humans: An unprecedented epizootic avian influenza A (H5N1) virus that is highly pathogenic has crossed the species barrier in Asia to cause many human fatalities and poses an increasing pandemic threat. This summary describes the features of human infection with influenza A (H5N1) and reviews recommendations for prevention and clinical management presented in part at the recent World Health Organization (WHO) Meeting .
[Health News] Bird flu scare in Kaziranga, birds found dead: Bale Chak Village (Tarn Taran) (Punjab), (ANI): Poultry farming in Punjab, which suffered heavy losses and closures during terrorism days and recently following the Bird flu scare, is now faced with another problem in the form of heavy tax duties. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

[Journal of Clinical Investigation -- New Articles] Journal of Clinical Investigation -- Memory T cells established by ...: In this study we examined the virus-specific CD4+ and CD8+ memory T cell responses to the human H3N2 influenza A virus proteome and determined the extent of cross-reactivity to the H5N1 virus in healthy individuals with low risk of avian influenza exposure in 2 populations, using 48 volunteers from the UK and 42 from Viet Nam (a country in which H5N1 outbreaks in poultry and avian to human transmission continue to be reported). Because participants in this study reported no previous H5N1 virus exposure (Vietnamese participants were confirmed H5 seronegative by hemagglutination inhibition assay), we reasoned that any recognition of H5N1 antigens would involve cross-reactive memory T cell populations established from previous exposure to human influenza strains.
[Critical Care - Latest Articles] Critical Care | Full text | Update of Avian Influenza A Infections ...: More recently, avian influenza virus subtypes (that is, H5, H7) have been found to directly infect humans from their avian hosts. The recent emergence, host expansion, and spread of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 subtype in Asia have heightened concerns globally, both in regards to mortality from HPAI H5N1 infection in humans and the potential of a new pandemic.
