Bird Flu Monitor > Avian Flu Vaccine Falls Short of Goals

http://flufactor.blogspot.com [fluFactor] A bird flu vaccine manufactured by the French firm Sanofi Pasteur did not perform as planned based on test results released by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Test recipients required twelve times the dosage of a regular flu shot to get the same level of protection that would normally be received against seasonal flu.

Vallat said that only about 30 countries that are members of his organization have the resources and systems to respond quickly to outbreaks of disease in animals, leaving 140 that need some support.

According to the report by the WHO today, confirming that there was no Bird Flu in Iraq, Maria Cheng mentions that the information that they receieved on the Iraqi test samples were requested from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean office, based in Cairo, which was following up the case.

[Avianflu.typepad.com] Avian Flu - What we need to know: Even as the World Health Organization presses China and other countries to share bird-flu data for the public good, the WHO itself runs a database limited to a select group of scientists and containing a massive trove of data -- some 2,300 genetic sequences of the virus, around a third of the world's known sequences, according to two people familiar with the database's contents. Any one of those sequences could hold clues to an effective human vaccine or drugs that could kill the virus, or help scientists determine how great a threat it poses.

Scienceblog.comhttp://www.scienceblog.com [Scienceblog.com] Vaccine provides 100 percent protection against avian flu virus in ...: Based on the published sequence of the Vietnam strain of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, members of the University of Pittsburgh Vector Core Facility, led by Wentao Gao, Ph.D., research instructor in the School of Medicine's department of surgery, constructed several adenovirus "vectors"--viruses that have been modified to serve as a vector, or delivery vehicle, for foreign genes or DNA--containing either the full genetic sequence of the HA protein or sequences for only parts, or subunits, of HA. They also constructed a vector containing sequences for a portion of the HA protein from the H5N1 Hong Kong strain.

If poultry flocks could be populated with a sufficient percentage of immune offspring, wouldn"t the flock and the poultry handlers be better protected?
