Bird Flu Monitor > BIRD FLU SPREADS

http://codethreeblog.blogspot.com [CODE THREE] It's nice to see that Effect Measure is finding a nice balance. They're staying above the rumor mongering fray, but linking to the best of it and posting when good, hard information becomes available. This news of the bird flu spreading along the migratory route is not surprising, but it is unsettling. Still no definitive reports that it has jumped to humans, thankfully. TECHNORATI TAG: H5N1...

Wandering Willow[Wandering Willow] Losing A Beloved Pet: Within the past 24 hours, I've heard of a friend whose beloved pet bird died, and one whose beloved cat..., purring until they get better. The few times I’ve had a devastating case of the flu, she stays... to sniff flowers too. These days she is too arthritic to accompany us on walks. Instead, on nice

Radio.weblogs.com[Radio.weblogs.com] Kevin Schofield's Weblog: In 1918, it killed 50 million people worldwide. The current bird flu has approximately a 70% human mortality rate -- even in healthy adults -- though experts believe that in mutating to become human-to-human transmissable, it will become less deadly. Last week it was reported that Vietnam is seeing a lower mortality rate, 35%, which is good news in that fewer people are dying, but bad news that it may be the leading indicator that H5N1 is indeed mutating.

Trishwilson.typepad.com[Trishwilson.typepad.com] Trish Wilson's Blog: Scientists Believe That Bird Flu Will Mutate ...: According to one news report, the CDC says "there is a high chance that the avian flu will mutate into a form than can transfer from human to human. It is currently the right season for the flu virus to spread in Asia, so the CDC expects to see more cases in the next few weeks. Although few deaths have been reported so far, it is very likely that the numbers will increase." The symptoms of avian influenza in humans includes "typical influenza-like symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches) to eye infections (conjunctivitis), pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, viral pneumonia, and other severe and life-threatening complications." Influenza drugs such as amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir have worked, but influenza strains may become resistant to drug treatment so these drugs may not always be effective.

Imao.us[Imao.us] IMAO: Still, I was invited by John Hinderaker of Power Line who was organizing this blog arm of Live 8 along with Joe Trippi, and I thought it was certainly worth a listen. It ends up that Bob Geldof, the organizer or Live 8, has a real plan for tackling poverty in Africa (real, in that it involved free trade and competition in parts of it) and hopes the blogosphere can use some of its influence in pushing towards the means needed for the end. The conference call should be up as a podcast a little later, and I'll urge you all to listen to it.
