[Home (aboutflu.net)] HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese scientists have identified a gene in the H5N1 bird flu virus which they say is responsible for its virulence in poultry, opening the way for new vaccines.

That means we'll need more scientists like Guan, willing to venture into live-animal markets in countries like Vietnam, India and Indonesia”and we need governments willing to let them do their jobs.”By Bryan Walsh/Tokyo
[Birdflublog.blogspot.com] THE BIRD FLU BLOG: The Bird Flu Blog will bring together news and official announcements of the spread of avian flu throughout the world, the plans to combat its spread, notes from history on previous pandemics and how they were fought, and a look at the conspiracy theories that are already taking root. This is not academia, this is one person's reportage of a world on the brink of disaster.
[Avianflu.typepad.com] Avian Flu - What we need to know: Even as the World Health Organization presses China and other countries to share bird-flu data for the public good, the WHO itself runs a database limited to a select group of scientists and containing a massive trove of data -- some 2,300 genetic sequences of the virus, around a third of the world's known sequences, according to two people familiar with the database's contents. Any one of those sequences could hold clues to an effective human vaccine or drugs that could kill the virus, or help scientists determine how great a threat it poses.
