Bird Flu Monitor > Echinaforce: Impairs Influenza Virus Propagation - CAM Watcher

[CAM Watcher] The data presented in this work have shown that a standardized preparation of Echinacae has the potential to impair influenza virus propagation, including seasonal strains and strains of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses as well as the new pandemic strain of swine origin at concentrations recommended for oral use and below. Furthermore the preparation does not induce emergence of resistant virus variants and is still active against strains that have become resistant to treatment with neuraminidase inhibitors.

[Gaea Times (by Simple Thoughts) Breaking News and incisive views 24/7] Boffins approaching universal treatment for all influenza strains: WASHINGTON - When flu season dies out in the US each spring, some strains of influenza actually migrate, spending the summer in South America and perhaps travelling even farther away, a new study suggests. "The prevailing view that has developed over the past three years or so is the out-of-tropics hypothesis, in which the strains that bring about each temperate flu season originate from China and Southeast Asia, where influenza A is less seasonal," said University of Michigan postdoctoral fellow Trevor Bedford.

[Flu Symptoms Blog] Flu Symptoms Blog Ӽ Avian Influenza - Bird Flu FAQ: In the human body, this avian flu virus then undergoes an antigenic shift, combines with genetic material of a human strain of influenza virus and creates an entirely new strain of virus against which humans have little or no immunity. These genetic reassortments may also take place is the body of a third species (susceptible to both avian and human viruses) like the pig, where an avian influenza A virus and human influenza virus mix their genetic information and produce a new virus which might be able to infect humans.

[Drug Discovery Opinion] Drug Discovery Opinion » Targeting Influenza A Nucleoprotein: Although the recent sporadic outbreaks of influenza A virus H5N1 and of a new variant of H1N1 in 2009 were less serious than initially feared, public health responses gave an indication of the potential for pandemic influenza A to wreak havoc amongst human populations. Timely development of vaccines should help to contain future outbreaks, but effective antiviral medicines will also be needed.

"These findings warrant continued investigation of TCAD as a potentially broad spectrum treatment to address drug resistant influenza."
