Bird Flu Monitor > Guangdong Woman Ill With H9 Avian Flu
[Avian Flu Diary] While we normally think of H5N1 when we hear of `avian flu’, the truth is, there are a number of avian influenza viruses out there, and humans have been (on rare occasions) infected with strains of H5, H7, H9, and H10 influenza.

[DoomDaily] Epidemic Hazard - Asia - China | DoomDaily: Four girls and a boy were confirmed to have suffered from H9 infection in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2008. People should avoid contact with live poultry to minimise the chance of being infected with avian flu.
[Chen Qi -The World of Micro-Organism Virus | Swine flu | H5N1 | NOVEL H1N1 INFLUENZA] Chen Qi -The World of Micro-Organism Virus | Swine flu | H5N1 ...: The Gyeonggi Province Education Office, on the other hand, will gauge the potential risk that the flu poses at each school with numerical marks that take into account various elements, such as school size, population density, contraction rate and the speed of the flu’s spread. On a 50-mark scale, those reaching between 10 and 15 will have individual classes stop operations.
[ThePoultrySite - Industry News] Doctors Warn of H9 Flu Danger to Human Health: Serum samples obtained from these subjects were assayed for antibodies against H5 and H9 avian influenza virus with a haemagglutination-inhibition assay containing four haemagglutination units of inactivated H5N2 virus strain A/Turkey/England/N28/1973 and H9N2 virus strain A/Chicken/Shandong/6/1996. The results were further confirmed, as described previously by means of a neutralisation assay against 100 tissue-culture infective doses of H5N1 strains A/Hong Kong/486/1997 and A/Vietnam/1194/2004 and H9N2 strain HK/2108/2003.

The N3 and N7- ELISAs also reacted specifically to their type specific sera and did not exhibit any cross-reaction with heterologous neuraminidase subtype specific sera.
[HKSAR Government Press Releases] Hospital Authority response on outbreaks of avian flu among ducks ...: In accordance with the "Guideline on Management Approach of Influenza-like-illness (ILI) & Community-acquired Pneumonia (CAP) Suspected of Avian Influenza", frontline hospital staff would look out for patients' epidemiological link to avian influenza, among others, history of recent travel (seven days) outside Hong Kong with history of visiting poultry farm / zoo / wild birds in areas known to have outbreaks of Avian Influenza A(H5)(H7)(H9).
[Virology Journal - Latest Articles] Virology Journal | Full text | Protein intrinsic disorder and ...: The membrane-distal domain consists of a globular "head", which is formed by HA1 and which can be further subdivided into the R region (residues 108–261), containing the receptor-binding site and major epitopes for neutralizing antibodies, and the E region (residues 56–108 and 262–274), with close structural homology to the esterase domain of influenza C HA esterase fusion (HEF) protein [18]. The HA2 chain contains two membrane-interacting hydrophobic peptide sequences: an N-terminal "fusion peptide" (residues 1–23), which interacts with the target membrane bilayer [19], and a C-terminal transmembrane segment that passes through the viral membrane.
[ScienceBlogs Channel : Medicine & Health] Pandemic influenza subtypes: end of the year musings : Effect Measure: Is the high degree of virulence of H5N1 associated with the surface proteins (forgive my layman language) that define the subtype, or is the virulence associated with internal genetic characteristics of H5N1? If the latter is a possibility, then would it not be possible that a H7N7, H7N2 (as in Wales outbreak earlier this year) reassort with H5N1 and acquire this virulence while retaining the original subtype?
