Bird Flu vaccine protects animal mothers and the unborn - The Bird ...
[The Bird Flu Report] Information on protective immunity for pregnant animals by vaccination against the H5N1 influenza virus is limited. Here, we show that the immunization of pregnant mice with inactivated H5N1 influenza vaccine protects them, their fetuses, and their infant mice from H5N1 influenza viruses.

A TIME'S MEMORY: Avian influenza A(H5N1) in humans: lessons from ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Although no association has yet been established between the level of exposure to avian influenza A(H5N1) and fatalities in Egypt, reports on workers in Asia showed that a high prevalence of infection in the poultry population is associated with a higher incidence of infection in humans, and that controlling such outbreaks of H5N1 influenza in the poultry flocks can stop human infection [7,10,11]. In addition, genetic characterisation of viruses from both the human and avian populations in Asia revealed that the viruses from both species were very similar [9,10].

A TIME'S MEMORY: T-705 (favipiravir) activity against lethal H5N1 ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Here, we demonstrate that T-705 effectively protects mice from lethal infection with oseltamivir-sensitive or -resistant highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses. Furthermore, our biochemical analysis suggests that T-705 ribofuranosyl triphosphate, an active form of T-705, acts like purines or purine nucleosides in human cells and does not inhibit human DNA synthesis.

A TIME'S MEMORY: New Research Findings Can Improve Avian Flu ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Genetic analyses of avian influenza in wild birds can help pinpoint likely carrier species and geographic hot spots where Eurasian viruses would be most likely to enter North America, according to new U.S. Geological Survey research. Persistence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI H5N1) virus in Eurasia and Africa, and concerns that the virus might be transported among continents by migratory birds has resulted in global surveillance programs.

[A TIME'S MEMORY] In this study, we show that the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIV) (A/crow/Kyoto/53/04 and A/chicken/Egypt/CL6/07) induced apoptosis in duck embryonic fibroblasts (DEF). In contrast, apoptosis was reduced among cells infected with low pathogenic AIVs (A/duck/HK/342/78 [H5N2], A/duck/HK/820/80 [H5N3], A/wigeon/Osaka/1/01 [H7N7], and A/turkey/Wisconsin/1/66 [H9N2].

Concerns Grow Over Possible H1N1-H5N1 'Reassortment,' Other ...
[Not Another CONspiracy] Virologists and influenza authorities are becoming increasingly concerned that the 2009 A-H1N1 flu virus could “reassort” with the highly virulent H5N1 avian flu that’s still prevalent in parts of the world like China, and that a mutation could occur resulting in a new strain that has the lethality of H5N1 and the human transmissibility of A-H1N1.

Prevalence of Antibodies against Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Virus ...
[Elites TV] Between 2003 and 2005, highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses caused large scale outbreaks in poultry in the Ho Chi Minh City area in Vietnam. We studied the prevalence of antibodies against H5N1 in poultry workers and cullers who were active in the program in Ho Chi Minh City in 2004 and 2005.

Smart Economy: Genes Determine Susceptibility to H5N1 Avian ...
[Smart Economy] Despite the countless cases reported in birds, the number of human cases remains few and of those few more than 90% occurred in genetically related family members indicating a possible genetic correlation. In the study researchers conducted genome-wide linkage analysis to identify chromosomes that contribute to varying susceptibility to H5N1 in two inbred strains of mice challenged with a lethal dose of a highly pathogenic H5N1 virus.

[Chen Qi -The World of Micro-Organism Virus | Swine flu | H5N1 | NOVEL H1N1 INFLUENZA] A report in the online Lancet medical journal suggests that allowing children to fall ill with seasonal flu may protect them against more dangerous pandemic strains. Vaccinating children aged six months to five years against seasonal flu might not be in their best interests, say the three Dutch doctors, led by Dr Guus Rimmelzwaan, from Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam.

[Chen Qi -The World of Micro-Organism Virus | Swine flu | H5N1 | NOVEL H1N1 INFLUENZA] During the first wave of the H1N1 outbreak last spring, an unusually high number of Utah children -- 21 -- were hospitalized with complicated bacterial pneumonia, Byington said. That number is expected to be even higher this fall, when both the H1N1 and seasonal flu strains are circulating at full winter strength.
