H7 Study Available Online At PNAS

Avian Flu Diaryhttp://afludiary.blogspot.com/2008/05/h7-study-available-online-at-pnas.html [Avian Flu Diary] We identified a low pathogenic H7N2 virus isolated from a man in New York in 2003, A/NY/107/03, which replicated efficiently in the upper respiratory tract of ferrets and was capable of transmission in this species by direct contact. These results indicate that H7 influenza viruses from the North American lineage have acquired sialic acid-binding properties that more closely resemble those of human influenza viruses and have the potential to spread to naïve animals.

Avian influenza and the poultry trade

Docutickerhttp://www.docuticker.com/?p=19845 [Docuticker] Because of high mortality rates, high rates of contagion, and the possibility of cross-species infection to mammals including humans, high pathogenic avian influenza is a major concern both to consumers and producers of poultry. The implications of the avian influenza for international poultry markets are large and include the loss of consumer confidence, loss of competitiveness, loss of market shares, supply shortages, and disruptions of trade flows.

Scientists Assess Risk Of Potential Flu Pandemic Spread Via Global Airlines

[MedicoNews.com] H5N1 avian influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu, has not yet resulted in a pandemic influenza because the virus lacks the ability to spread efficiently and sustainably among humans.
