Avian Influenza Technical Advisor, Thailand, USAID

 [Work, Travel, Eat, Sleep] In September 2005, faced with the growing threat of HPAI in Southeast Asia, USAID made avian and pandemic influenza a top priority for all missions and posts worldwide and asked missions to support implementation of an emergency containment plan in the shortest time possible. Since that time, the U.S. Congress has pledged over $434 million to support HPAI prevention and control activities outside the United States.

H7 Study Available Online At PNAS

 [Avian Flu Diary] We identified a low pathogenic H7N2 virus isolated from a man in New York in 2003, A/NY/107/03, which replicated efficiently in the upper respiratory tract of ferrets and was capable of transmission in this species by direct contact. These results indicate that H7 influenza viruses from the North American lineage have acquired sialic acid-binding properties that more closely resemble those of human influenza viruses and have the potential to spread to naïve animals.

Indonesia Dismisses Fears over Reassortment of Human/Avian Flu Viruses

 [A1A South]  JAKARTA, March 20 (Xinhua) — Indonesia dismissed fears of a virus re-assortment between avian and human seasonal influenza strains in a 2007 human death involving bird flu infection, the country’s health ministry senior official said here.    Director General of Communicable Diseases I Nyoman Kandun said the possibility of re-assortment between the avian influenza virus and other flu viruses was always possible, but had not yet happened.

Indonesia Is Country Worst Hit By Bird Flu - High Load Of ...

Scientists Assess Risk Of Potential Flu Pandemic Spread Via Global Airlines

[MedicoNews.com] H5N1 avian influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu, has not yet resulted in a pandemic influenza because the virus lacks the ability to spread efficiently and sustainably among humans. However, public health officials are greatly concerned that a human flu strain could be triggered by the H5N1 virus, which is found in bird flocks around the world and has repeatedly crossed the species barrier and infected people.
