Bird Flu vaccine protects animal mothers and the unborn - The Bird ...
[The Bird Flu Report] Information on protective immunity for pregnant animals by vaccination against the H5N1 influenza virus is limited. Here, we show that the immunization of pregnant mice with inactivated H5N1 influenza vaccine protects them, their fetuses, and their infant mice from H5N1 influenza viruses.

A TIME'S MEMORY: Avian influenza virus isolates from wild birds ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] The direct transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses to humans in Eurasia and subsequent disease has sparked research efforts leading to better understanding of HPAI virus transmission and pathogenicity in mammals. There has been minimal focus on examining the capacity of circulating low pathogenic wild bird avian influenza viruses to infect mammals.

Pandemic update | Avian Influenza and the Pandemic Threat
[Untitled] In North Africa, limited data suggests that pandemic influenza virus transmission remains active and geographically widespread, particularly in Morocco, Algeria, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, and in Egypt, although most countries in the region appeared to have recently passed a peak of activity during December 2009 or January 2010. In west Asia, pandemic influenza activity continues be geographically regional to widespread, however activity levels have continued to decline or remain low since December 2009.

A TIME'S MEMORY: Avian influenza A(H5N1) in humans: lessons from ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Although no association has yet been established between the level of exposure to avian influenza A(H5N1) and fatalities in Egypt, reports on workers in Asia showed that a high prevalence of infection in the poultry population is associated with a higher incidence of infection in humans, and that controlling such outbreaks of H5N1 influenza in the poultry flocks can stop human infection [7,10,11]. In addition, genetic characterisation of viruses from both the human and avian populations in Asia revealed that the viruses from both species were very similar [9,10].

A TIME'S MEMORY: New Research Findings Can Improve Avian Flu ...
[A TIME'S MEMORY] Genetic analyses of avian influenza in wild birds can help pinpoint likely carrier species and geographic hot spots where Eurasian viruses would be most likely to enter North America, according to new U.S. Geological Survey research. Persistence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI H5N1) virus in Eurasia and Africa, and concerns that the virus might be transported among continents by migratory birds has resulted in global surveillance programs.

[A TIME'S MEMORY] In this study, we show that the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIV) (A/crow/Kyoto/53/04 and A/chicken/Egypt/CL6/07) induced apoptosis in duck embryonic fibroblasts (DEF). In contrast, apoptosis was reduced among cells infected with low pathogenic AIVs (A/duck/HK/342/78 [H5N2], A/duck/HK/820/80 [H5N3], A/wigeon/Osaka/1/01 [H7N7], and A/turkey/Wisconsin/1/66 [H9N2].

[Labspaces.net Latest News RSS News Feed] The Wisconsin research was conducted in mice and demonstrated that the compound was effective and safe against H5N1 virus, the highly pathogenic bird flu virus, which some scientists fear could spark a global epidemic of deadly influenza. The compound is also effective against seasonal flu and more worrisome varieties such as the H1N1 virus, and has already been tested against circulating seasonal influenza in humans in Japan where it is on the brink of Phase III clinical trials in people.
