[Investment U] Return of the Swine Flu: Part 1: It’s worth remembering, though, that the regular flu kills about 2% of the people it infects - mostly those already weak, infirm, very young or very old. The swine flu, however, kills around 5% of those who get it - and the deaths tend to be young adults, prime-of-life types, because of something called a cytokine storm.

[Case about Bird Flu] More analysis of the risks of the decree granting total immunity ...: Curiously enough, a full year before any reported case of the current alleged H1N1, the major pharmaceutical company, Baxter, filed for a patent for H1N1 vaccine: Baxter Vaccine Patent Application US 2009/0060950 A1. [euro|topics - MAIN FOCUS] euro|topics - Swine flu spreads across the world: The vaccine expert Richard Halvorsen expresses his fears in the conservative daily The Times that vaccines against the swine flu virus will not be tested thoroughly enough: "To be properly tested for safety a vaccine needs to be given to tens of thousands of people and followed up for several months to detect uncommon but serious side-effects. This is clearly not going to happen with the swine flu vaccine, which is being fast-tracked at unprecedented speed.
[Creative-i] Creative-i / This politicisation of swine flu is bad for our ...: In other words, it is not just a moderate strain of influenza, it is an exceptional strain of influenza. So while politicians and officialdom are simultaneously forced to admit that, for most people, swine flu will not even require treatment, their incessant swine-flu chatter, their constant need to make announcements, to speculate and faithlessly reassure, ends up creating swine flu as something extraordinary.
[SWINE BIRD FLU] Mother-of-six and baby among latest swine flu fatalities: A woman who gave birth prematurely and a baby were revealed to be among the latest victims of swine flu as the number of UK deaths from the infection rose sharply. [House Price Crash News Blog] News Blog > Swine flu and deflation - HousePriceCrash.co.uk: Oh and despite some of the foamings at the mouth over at on the forum (which I dip in and out of but it's really quite a nasty, unpleasant place), I don't believe the 'is it deflation/inflation/something horrible and new coming' debate is remotely settled. If QE becomes impossible due to bond markets and other factors, then deflation remains a possibility IMO and a season of depressed activity in the economy could well make that more likely.
[Daniel Hannan's blog listings.] Swine flu: why are fatalities largely confined to Mexico ...: With any luck, he’d still be in mid-speech by 2012 too, so it might work after all..I wanted to say that during the last bird flu scare, the French government stockpiled all the necessary medicine to combat a threat that never DID materialize. Meanwhile, on the (albeit somewhat hellish and very far away)DOM-TOM island of La Réunion, hundreds of people were dying of the mosquito-borne disease chikungunya, for which the government was totally unprepared and remained unprepared. The Health Minister visited from Metropolitan France at the start of the outbreak but failed to bring a single box of medicine in the hold of his specially-commissioned plane.
[BBC NEWS | Fergus On Flu] BBC - Fergus On Flu: What are the chances of dying from swine flu?: Nothing new there, experts say that the original 1918 H1N1 virus was with us until the 50's until crowded out by the pandemic strain that emerged in the late fifties, which came from wild ducks in the form of a re-assorted H2N2 virus, which experts also say then re-arranged again a decade later striking back in a H3N2 form - all with genetic parts of avian, swine and human flu. What struck me afterwards was the misleading thought within these blogs that the 'avian flu' part of the virus meant H5N1 - something people got very wrong, that particular avian flu is H5N1 in it's entirety - this is H1N1 - prompting some very worrying comments from people.

[BBC NEWS | Fergus On Flu] BBC - Fergus On Flu: Time for concern, not panic: WHO itself states that whilst they could, theoretically, make 4.9 billion doses of vaccine per year, or per two flu seasons, but that's only so if all production is aimed towards a vaccine and if the manufacturer utilises 'dose-sparing', which the WHO defines as 'using a smaller quantity of active principle' (which I take to be the use of adjuvants -- something not everyone is entirely happy with...) The WHO notes that 'at least 1 to 2 billion doses per year' is a more conservative possibility. Seeing as current estimations state that 2 jabs will be needed (with a possibility for 3 in children), it's likely that a shortage will arise.
