The rise of resistance to adamantanes -- which include the nonprescription drugs amantadine and rimantadane -- appears to be linked to Chinese farmers adding the drugs to chicken feed as a flu preventative, according to a 2008 paper by researchers from China Agricultural University, said Hill.

In all but one case, experts ruled out human-to-human spread of the virus.
[Intellectual Property Watch] Intellectual Property Watch » Blog Archive » World Health Assembly ...: Another key issue for the United States is the sharing of avian influenza virus samples with the established WHO system for developing vaccines. Some developing countries, led by Indonesia, have raised strong concerns that when they share their virus samples into the system, all the labs are controlled by developed countries and lead to the developed countries lining up sufficient quantities for their own populations while even the hardest hit developing countries have had trouble getting access or sharing the benefits from avian flu treatments even as patent filings rapidly rise.

[Mystery Rays from Outer Space] Immune evasion as an antiviral target | Mystery Rays from Outer Space: But the cytokine storm idea is mainly for the highly lethal strains of flu, like the 1918 strain and H5N1 avian flu. For standard flu strains, the immune response probably does cause some of the symptoms (that’s true for virtually every infection, of course) but isn’t as serious as the virus per se.
