[Pathogen Alert] Chickens standing guard. Wasnt this a Mel Gibson movie?: Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to enjoy a bowl of genetically-modified corn cereal with milk from genetically-modified cows. It’s my secret recipe for protecting myself against bird flu and West Nile infection, you see. Thanks to the brilliance of Monsanto’s genetic scientists, if bird flu or West Nile enters my bloodstream, deadly pathogens will encounter a whole new battalion of genes that will destory the bastard viruses.

[Effectmeasure.blogspot.com] Effect Measure: Bird flu and bullshit: High level political support requires making a serious concern visible and public so that adequate resources can be allocated by cash-strapped state health departments who need urgent reasons to shift around the paltry contents of their shrinking pots of money. This didn't (and wasn't going to) happen during the election campaign when the Bush Administration didn't want to remind people about the flu vaccine fiasco, how dependent we were on the rest of the world or how we face threats not related to the "axis of evil."
[Effectmeasure.blogspot.com] Effect Measure: US News on bird flu: All this casts harsh light on long-standing weaknesses in the nation's medical defense system, which include an unreliable vaccine supply and insufficient hospital surge capacity. Many hospital emergency rooms are already hard pressed to treat the influx of patients from a normal flu season, let alone a contagion that could send as many as 10 million people to the hospital. And the country's vaccine production capability is woefully inadequate, with only two manufacturers in the market and little financial incentive for other companies to enter. When contamination shut down one company's plant last year, obliterating half the nation's flu vaccine supply, the United States' entire influenza immunization program was thrown into chaos.

[Radio.weblogs.com] Kevin Schofield's Weblog: H5N1 is the new SARS. It's more commonly known as Bird Flu and it's spreading in Asia -- starting in Vietnam, but recently spotted in China, Thailand and Indonesia. Currnently can spread from bird to bird and bird to human through excretions. There have been a couple of isolated cases where it is possible that it spread human-to-human, but there is no definitive proof of that.
[Availablelightonline.com] Totem To Temple » Blog Archive » Pigs Spreading Bird Flu: This morning during breakfast, I was watching Fox and Friends weekend edition (hosted by TtoT’s poll winner for hottest babe at FoxNews Juliet Huddy). I saw on the scrolling feeder at the bottom of the television screen the words ‘Pigs spreading bird flu’.
